Introduction to Computers in Medicine. Available to first year medical students in lieu of biostatistics. Introduced students to fundamental concepts in hardware and software, algorithm analysis, and the BASIC language. Students wrote a program in BASIC to conduct life-table analysis. A final written examination was also required.

Applied Research Seminars: Introduced medical students to the design, development, and analysis of small-scale epidemiological databases using statistical packages available for microcomputers. Available to first and second-year medical students.

The Transformation of the U.S. Health Care System: This course explored the evolution of the U.S. health care system and its current transformations in light of the post-World War II development of the national and international economies. In particular, structural changes, productivity slowdown and crisis of profitability, rising health care costs and corporatization of medicine, including the rise of managed care were discussed.

Comparative Health Care Systems: Examination of the problems of the U.S. health care system in light of experiences of other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries with an emphasis on the role of the market and government. Implications for costs, access, efficiency, equity, and quality were explored.

Health Care Reform Proposals for the 1990s. This course examined various health care proposals including tax credit for purchase of private health insurance, Compulsory purchase of private insurance through employers and compulsory purchase of insurance by self-employed, with government providing insurance for the poor and aged, pay-or-play proposals, managed competition, and single-payer insurance plan. A political economy framework for the analysis of costs, access, efficiency, equity, and quality sensitive to historical and institutional context was developed through which competing proposals were evaluated. Other health care system, including Canada, Britain, Germany, and Cuba were examined for comparative purposes.

A Survey of History of Economic Thought. A critical survey of the Classical, Marxian, Neoclassical, Keynesian, and institutionalist, post-Keynesian/Sraffian schools of economic thought were examined with a view to their central tenants and methodologies. Taught for the senior economics student class at St. Francis College.

Evolution of the organization of economic life in selected Western societies since the decline of the Roman Empire: the rise and disintegration of feudalism, transition to the capitalist economies, industrial revolutions and the maturity of advanced capitalist economies.
